The Chevy Bolt Returns with a Sub-$30K Price and 255-Mile Range

The Bolt slots back in at the bottom of Chevy’s EV lineup, with 255 miles of range and significantly faster charging times.

The 2027 Chevy Bolt will go on sale in the first quarter of 2026 and carry a starting price of just $28,995.

The styling is simply evolutionary, and the range only increases slightly from the last model to 255 miles.

Charging times will drop thanks to a peak charging rate of 150 kilowatts, up from just 50 on the old model, and a NACS charge port comes standard.

The Chevy Bolt is back and sticks to its mission of providing affordable electric transport. When Chevy discontinued the Bolt EV and EUV in 2023, they had become the most popular non-Tesla EVs, selling a combined 62,045 units. Chevy quickly got to work to refine its entry-level EV and get it back on sale. Now Chevy has revealed full details on the 2027 Bolt, which will go on sale next year with a starting price under $30,000.

The Bolt doesn’t look too different than before, retaining the general shape from the Bolt EUV—the slightly taller, more SUV-like model—but with refreshed front and rear ends. The slim headlights are linked by a black trim piece, while the trapezoidal lower grille trim has shrunk and sits below a sculpted, body-colored panel. The taillights and rear bumper have been revised, but overall, the look is incredibly similar to the previous Bolt EUV.

Inside, the cabin features a new dashboard setup pairing an 11.3-inch touchscreen with an 11.0-inch digital gauge cluster. A set of physical climate controls remains below. Like other Chevy EVs, the infotainment system won’t offer phone mirroring such as Apple CarPlay, with customers instead forced to rely on the Google Built-In infotainment. Chevy says the system will include apps like HBO Max and Angry Birds, with smart route planning integrated into Google Maps to make it easier to find chargers.

A New Motor and Battery

The changes under the skin are more substantial but not quite as game-changing as we’d hoped. The 2027 Bolt features a 65-kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, and while this battery chemistry is cheaper to produce, it is also less energy-dense. This means range is only up slightly over the previous Bolt EUV, with Chevy estimating 255 miles on a charge versus 247 miles for the 2023 EUV. Chevy says the battery is temporarily being sourced from an unnamed foreign supplier until GM can get LFP battery production underway in the U.S.

Still, Chevy made big improvements in the charging department. A NACS charge port will also allow the 2027 Bolt to use Tesla Superchargers without the need for an adapter, and the Bolt can charge far quicker than before. Chevy claims it can go from 10 to 80 percent in just 26 minutes, thanks to a peak charging rate that has skyrocketed from the old Bolt’s lethargic 55-kw rate to a respectable 150 kilowatts. The Bolt will also have vehicle-to-home bidirectional charging capability, and Chevy touts plug-and-charge capability, although it will initially only be available with EVgo chargers.

In terms of performance, well, the Bolt is still no sports car, but it should be competent enough for daily driving. A single electric motor, borrowed from the Equinox EV, provides 210 horsepower, up by 10 over the previous Bolt, routed exclusively to the front wheels. Chevy also claims it has improved the regenerative braking, and Super Cruise, GM’s hands-free driver-assistance system, will still be offered, now with the automatic lane-change feature.

Trims and Production

The 2027 Bolt will launch initially in the LT trim with the Comfort package as standard, starting at $29,990. Chevy will also offer an RS trim with sportier styling, starting at $32,995, with the lineup topped by the RS trim with the Tech package and a sunroof for $35,685. Super Cruise will be offered on the LT and RS trims but won’t be available till later next year.

Production will take place at GM’s factory in Fairfax, Kansas, with the first units shipping to dealerships in January. Later in 2026, Chevy will add a base 1LT model with a starting price of $28,995.

When the Bolt arrives, it will be the most affordable EV on sale in the United States, undercutting the 2026 Nissan Leaf, which starts at $31,485 and has 214 horsepower, 303 miles of range, and a 150-kilowatt peak charging rate. Nissan plans to add a base Leaf S model in the near future with a smaller battery and only 174 horsepower but has yet to divulge pricing for this trim.

Strangely, however, Chevy is referring to the 2027 Bolt as a “limited-run vehicle.” Still, it seems production capacity will not be capped, with Chevy stating that “Bolt and Equinox EV are expected to account for most of Chevrolet’s 2026 EV volume.” Yet the company also states that “we moved quickly to retain the nameplate in our portfolio for a little longer,” suggesting that the revised Bolt may not last more than a couple of model years. The Bolt is back, but it may not be back for long.
