2026 Nissan Rogue Expert Review: Compact Crossover Performance in 2026
Reviewed by Billy Rehbock
The 2026 Nissan Rogue, a staple in Nissan’s vehicle portfolio, continues to distinguish itself within the highly competitive compact SUV segment, even after its 2024 design refresh. While the 2026 model year features only minor refinements, the Nissan Rogue demonstrates a strong capability to maintain its standing at the forefront of the class. Prominent rivals include the Mazda CX-50, Kia Sportage, and Honda CR-V.
What’s New for the 2026 Nissan Rogue?
The 2026 Nissan Rogue introduces a new trim variant: the Dark Armor package. This option builds upon the existing SV model and incorporates both exterior and interior enhancements:
Exterior Enhancements
Gloss Black Accents: The Rogue Dark Armor package features striking gloss black accents on exterior elements such as mirrors, badging, pillar trim, grille, and mirror caps, contributing to a premium aesthetic.
Wheels: This trim is equipped with 18-inch gloss black wheels, complementing the darkened exterior styling.
Roof Rails: Satin black roof rails are included, adding both visual flair and functional versatility for carrying gear.
Panoramic Moonroof: Standard on this trim is a large panoramic moonroof, enhancing cabin brightness and the overall driving experience.
Interior Improvements
Heated Front Seats: Buyers of the Dark Armor trim benefit from heated front seats, providing enhanced comfort during colder weather.
Heated Steering Wheel: A heated steering wheel is included, adding another layer of luxury and driver convenience.
360-Degree Camera: The 360-degree camera system offers improved visibility, particularly useful for parking and low-speed maneuvers.
What We Think About the 2026 Nissan Rogue
Following continuous refinements to its third-generation lineup, the 2026 Nissan Rogue opts for a refresh that enhances its already competitive attributes. Nissan has earned recognition for its consistent efforts in improving one of its most popular models; the Rogue is deservedly positioned near the top of our compact SUV rankings.
Equipped with a turbocharged three-cylinder engine, the Rogue’s powertrain delivers responsive acceleration and efficient fuel consumption. The ride quality is smooth and comfortable, thanks to well-tuned suspension engineering. A spacious cabin ensures excellent passenger comfort and ample cargo storage capacity.
While the 2026 Nissan Rogue’s driving dynamics and physical packaging are commendable, the compact SUV has some areas for improvement. Road and tire noise become noticeable at highway speeds, which detracts from the Rogue’s otherwise smooth driving experience. The throttle response can also feel somewhat abrupt when the accelerator is pressed with more than light force.
A hybrid model would be a valuable addition to the lineup, especially if positioned as a more powerful and efficient alternative to the current turbocharged 1.5-liter I-3 engine. In fact, a plug-in hybrid variant may be introduced in the near future.
The standard infotainment system lacks sophistication, with laggy graphics and a dated interface. Upgrading to the Google-equipped infotainment technology resolves these issues, incorporating features such as Google Assistant, Google Maps, and additional applications available through the Google Play store. We would also like to see the Rogue receive a new safety award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS); although it has achieved high safety ratings in the past, some competitors have recently surpassed it in this regard.
These shortcomings are outweighed by the 2026 Nissan Rogue’s strengths. Refinement, handling, and overall driving composure are at an all-time high for Nissan’s popular compact SUV. For these reasons, the Rogue previously triumphed over its rivals in a 2023 comparison test. If Nissan continues to advance the Rogue in subsequent generations, the small crossover will remain a front-runner in the segment.
Top-Ranked Competitors
The Rogue faces strong competition from a variety of compact SUVs, including:
Kia Sportage: Known for its modern design and versatile interior.
Mazda CX-50: Praised for its athletic handling and upscale interior.
Honda CR-V: A perennial favorite for its reliability, spacious cabin, and fuel efficiency.
Subaru Forester: Valued for its standard all-wheel drive and superior ground clearance.
MotorTrend Tested: 2026 Nissan Rogue Performance
There is only one powertrain configuration available for the 2026 Nissan Rogue. A 1.5-liter turbocharged inline three-cylinder engine is paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) automatic, powering either the front wheels or an optional all-wheel-drive system. This three-cylinder engine is rated at 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque, regardless of the drivetrain layout.
Based on our performance testing, all-wheel-drive versions of the 2026 Nissan Rogue are expected to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds. However, the Rock Creek models, equipped with all-terrain tires, achieve a time of 8.8 seconds. In comparison, the Mazda CX-50, with its entry-level 2.5-liter I-4 engine and all-wheel drive, accelerates to 60 mph in 8.5 seconds.
This level of acceleration is adequate for daily driving but, as with most compact SUVs, requires some planning when executing overtaking maneuvers.
MPGs and Range
The 2026 Nissan Rogue is efficient for its class. Front-wheel-drive variants offer the best fuel economy, achieving 29 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, with a total driving range of 464 miles.
Most all-wheel-drive versions of the Rogue are rated at 28 mpg city and 35 mpg highway, with a range of approximately 450 miles. The Rock Creek variants, considering their off-road features, achieve 27 mpg city and 32 mpg highway, providing a range of about 421 miles.
For context, the naturally aspirated 2025 Mazda CX-50, which is available exclusively with all-wheel drive, underperforms compared to the Nissan Rogue with a fuel economy rating of 25 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, and a range of 445 miles. The driving range is similar due to a larger fuel tank capacity in the Mazda CX-50.
Safety Ratings and Features
For 2025, the Nissan Rogue received mixed safety ratings from the IIHS, with both Good and Acceptable scores in various crash tests. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded the Rogue an overall rating of five stars, indicating solid performance in crash safety evaluations. As of this writing, the 2026 Rogue has not received a safety award from IIHS; however, the Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-50, and Subaru Forester have recently achieved top safety designations.
Every 2026 Nissan Rogue comes standard with the following active safety features:
Automatic Emergency Braking: Detects potential frontal collisions and applies the brakes if the driver does not react.
Rear Automatic Emergency Braking: Prevents collisions with objects behind the vehicle while reversing.
Blind-Spot and Rear Cross-Traffic Monitoring: Provides alerts for vehicles in the driver’s blind spots and when backing out of parking spaces.
Adaptive High Beams: Adjust headlight intensity based on traffic conditions.
Intersection Assist: Enhances safety at intersections by detecting oncoming traffic.
Driver Attention Monitoring: Monitors the driver for signs of drowsiness or inattention.
Lane Departure Warning: Alerts drivers when they inadvertently drift out of their lane.
All models above the base Rogue S trim include lane keeping assistance with steering correction, which helps keep the vehicle centered in its lane.
Nissan’s ProPilot Assist technology is offered in several versions: 1.0, 1.1, and 2.1. SV models come standard with ProPilot Assist 1.0, which integrates adaptive cruise control and lane centering assistance.
SL models and higher receive ProPilot Assist 1.1 as standard equipment. This enhanced system includes traffic sign recognition and generally provides more responsive performance than the 1.0 system.
ProPilot Assist 2.1 is available on Platinum models as part of the Tech package. The 2.1 version enables hands-free driving with automated lane changing assistance, offering a higher level of driver support.
Cargo Space and Interior Room
The 2026 Nissan Rogue offers a very spacious interior for passengers in both the front and rear seats, although the Mazda CX-50 and Kia Sportage provide more legroom in the rear. Cargo volume is highly competitive within the segment, surpassing the storage space of both the CX-50 and the Sportage.
One notable detail not captured in technical specifications is the wide-opening rear doors on the 2026 Nissan Rogue, which facilitate easier entry and exit.
| Vehicle | Legroom (front/rear) | Cargo Space (seats up/down) |
| :— | :— | :— |
| 2026 Nissan Rogue | 41.5 / 38.5 inches | 36.5 (with underfloor storage) / 74.1 cubic feet |
| 2025 Mazda CX-50 | 41.7 / 3
