What We Think: The 2026 Camry at a Glance
The 2026 Toyota Camry looks familiar, yet it represents a substantial leap forward in terms of performance and technology compared to the outgoing model. Equipped with standard hybrid power, the Camry is incredibly efficient across the entire model range. This efficiency, however, does not come at the expense of driving enjoyment. Many industry observers, including myself, believe this could be the best-driving Camry ever, featuring impressive steering feel, linear brake response, and roll-resistant body control that make it a joy to drive on city streets and highways alike.
Toyota has armed the 2026 Camry with a wealth of driver assistance technology and modern entertainment features. The Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite, standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a wireless device charger provide the tech necessary to challenge rivals in the shrinking but ultra-competitive midsize sedan segment.
However, despite the overwhelming praise, shoppers should be aware that the midsize sedan has some surprising weaknesses. While the exterior design is attractive overall, only people who pay close attention to automotive news will notice that this is a redesigned car, as it carries over the same basic lines from the 2025 model.
Additionally, build quality inside the handsome-looking cabin appears to be lacking (at least, in our testing of 2025 models). The previous model used some cheaper materials, but everything felt as though it was bolted together well. While we loved driving the Camry in our 2025 Car of the Year testing, squeaks and rattles get in the way of what would otherwise be a quiet ride.
The 2026 Camry doesn’t see substantial changes, but we hope the automaker refines some of its manufacturing techniques to address our concerns with the interior. Otherwise, the Camry is a compelling option compared to rivals that aren’t nearly as quick, efficient, or engaging.
Performance and Powertrain
The 2026 Toyota Camry carries over from 2025 with its standard hybrid powertrain, which consists of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors. The output totals 225 horsepower for the default front-wheel-drive (FWD) model. This powertrain represents a significant engineering achievement by Toyota, offering the best of both worlds: the power needed for spirited driving and the fuel economy that keeps running costs low.
Toyota also offers all-wheel drive (AWD), which uses a third electric motor to power the rear wheels when the fronts don’t have enough traction. AWD output rises to a combined 232 horsepower. With FWD, the Camry accelerates from 0–60 mph in 6.9 seconds, which is brisk enough for passing on the highway. The AWD versions shave off a tenth for a time of just 6.8 seconds.
On the street, the Camry provides sufficient passing power for daily driving. The engine feels responsive, and the electric motors deliver instant torque, making the car feel quick from a standstill.
For comparison, the Honda Accord manages a 0-60 mph sprint of 7.9 seconds as a non-hybrid, or 6.6 seconds as a hybrid. This shows that the Camry’s standard hybrid setup is highly competitive in terms of acceleration, especially considering the Camry is essentially a midsize sedan that feels more like a sports car in some driving scenarios.
MPGs and Range
Fuel economy is a strong point for the 2025 Camry, and these figures are expected to carry over to the 2026 model year. The EPA’s ratings vary depending on the trim level, with the most efficient variant being the front-wheel-drive (FWD) 2025 Camry LE, which is rated at an outstanding 53 miles per gallon city and 50 miles per gallon highway.
The all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, while providing enhanced traction, slightly reduces fuel efficiency, with a rating of 51 miles per gallon city and 49 miles per gallon highway.
The rest of the FWD Camry range is rated from 48–51 miles per gallon city and 47–49 miles per gallon highway, while the remaining variants of the AWD Camry lineup score 44–46 miles per gallon city and 43–46 miles per gallon highway. These numbers make the Camry one of the most fuel-efficient sedans on the market, giving buyers a significant advantage in fuel savings over time.
The Toyota Camry vs. Its Rivals: A Competitive Landscape
When we tested the 2025 Camry against its contemporaries to see which midsize sedan was best, the Toyota emerged as the winner. Our shootout of sub-$40,000 sedans included the Kia K5, Honda Accord, and Hyundai Sonata.
The Kia K5: The Kia offers great styling and a strong list of standard equipment, accompanied by good passenger and cargo volume. However, the Kia’s midsize sedan’s driving dynamics leave a lot to be desired, its transmission is slow to react, and its standard engine drones.
The Honda Accord: The Honda Accord is sophisticated and refined, but it doesn’t offer all-wheel drive. We aren’t fans of its high pricing near the top of its trim range, nor do we like its untrustworthy lane keep assist.
The Hyundai Sonata: The Hyundai Sonata provides a relaxed, comfortable ride with consistent braking performance and a strong suite of standard equipment. However, Hyundai’s midsize offering is underpowered and decidedly lacking in sportiness.
That leaves the Toyota Camry, which came out on top in the comparison test. The all-hybrid lineup returns stellar fuel economy without giving up driving enjoyment. Though the cockpit is a little too cozy for some and the ride quality is on the firm side, the Camry feels like a thoroughly modern midsize sedan at the top of its game.
Safety Ratings and Features
The 2025 Toyota Camry receives strong safety scores, which we expect will also apply to the 2026 model.
