The Shift Towards New Luxury The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering has historically served as the opening act, the opulent appetizer before the main course that is Sunday’s Pebble Concours. However, for a growing segment of the automotive world, The Quail has long since outpaced the Sunday event. This shift is driven by a preference for late-model and brand-new supercars and hypercars. I have lost count of how many car friends make the pilgrimage to Car Week but depart on Sunday morning, having no interest in “a bunch of old cars.” The passing of the Geneva International Motor Show has left a gaping void in the supercar calendar, a void The Quail has filled with remarkable success. This new generation of collectors often values cutting-edge performance and exotic design over the preservation of vintage history. I must admit, I also attended the 2024 Vegas Concours and, while I enjoyed myself, it struck me as regional, even provincial. The cars were nice, but they were largely the usual suspects. In fact, had I not been working on a project with Czinger, who invited me as their guest, I probably would not have bothered going this year. But man, am I glad I did. What Is It? A Celebration of the Modern Supercar The Wynn Las Vegas Concours is transforming the concept of what a Concours d’elegance can be. Imagine a sprawling expanse where the world’s rarest and most exclusive machines are displayed not under tent covers, but under the brilliant Nevada sun. This year, the Wynn had 48 Bugatti Veyrons on the lawn. You read that right. Of the 450 total Veyrons built and the 100 sold in North America, 48 were in Vegas. Well, 49, as Bugatti also brought along a stunning white Vitesse Super Sport to celebrate the Veyron’s 20th anniversary—along with a Bolide, Centodieci, Chiron Super Sport, Divo, Mistral, and a model of the upcoming Tourbillon, the 18-cylinder hybrid that will replace the Chiron. Displaying more than 10 percent of all Bugatti Veyrons ever built in one place is still mind-boggling.
The younger generation is equally enthusiastic about Pagani vehicles. The Las Vegas Concours hosted more than 40 of them. I didn’t count exactly (I was too busy drooling over the Veyrons), but there were several Zondas, including a Zonda Revolution (one of five), dozens of Huayras, a bunch of Utopias, and—worryingly for The Quail—the debut of the Huayra Codalunga Speedster Pagani plans to make 10 of at a price of
