The Quail vs. The Las Vegas Concours: Is the King Losing His Crown?
For over a decade, the automotive world has grappled with a persistent question: is the Concours d’elegance still the pinnacle of elite automotive exhibitions? While the traditional heavyweight, the Monterey Car Week, anchored by the legendary Pebble Beach Concours, has long held the crown, emerging events are challenging its dominion. In my years immersed in the world of exotic cars, the debate between the “old guard” and the “new blood” has become increasingly heated. As an industry veteran, I can confidently state that Pebble Beach remains the gold standard, but the challenger — The Quail — has grown into a formidable contender, now facing a new and powerful rival: the Concours at Wynn Las Vegas.
The luxury automotive landscape is evolving rapidly. What was once a niche hobby for the ultra-wealthy has exploded into a multi-billion-dollar industry, attracting attention from major collectors, tech moguls, and the automotive press. With the landscape shifting and new automotive events emerging with stunning regularity, the question is no longer just about which shows are the best, but which events are most relevant to the collector of exotic cars in 2026. This report analyzes the changing dynamics of the Concours d’elegance landscape, focusing on luxury cars and collector cars, and identifies why the Las Vegas Concours has suddenly become the top alternative to The Quail and Pebble Beach.
What Makes A Concours d’elegance “The Best”?
Before diving into the Vegas competition, we must first establish the criteria. The term “Concours d’elegance” itself, rooted in French, translates roughly to a “contest of elegance.” Historically, it was a display of sophisticated motor carriages judged primarily on appearance, presentation, and overall “turnout.” Think pristine chrome, flawless upholstery, and stunning coachwork.
However, the definition has evolved. In 2026, a premier automotive event must offer more than just beauty. It must offer exclusivity, brand representation, innovation, and an experience that matches the price point. The Quail, with its elite atmosphere and reputation as the premier platform for hypercars and supercars, has mastered this. But the Las Vegas Concours has taken a different approach, leveraging the unique capabilities of Las Vegas to offer an experience that simply cannot be replicated on the manicured lawns of Pebble Beach.
The Quail: The Consummate Appetizer
For years, The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering has served as the perfect “appetizer” to the main course that is Sunday’s Pebble Concours. However, for a growing segment of collector cars enthusiasts, The Quail has transcended this role. For those who gravitate toward modern supercars and hypercars, The Quail has become the main event. In my experience, many attendees, especially those focused on hypercar culture, depart the Car Week on Sunday morning, having no interest in “old cars,” regardless of their historical significance.
A Global Platform for Supercars
The automotive industry relies on these events to debut new models. The vacuum left by the dissolution of the Geneva International Motor Show has been capably filled by The Quail. It provides manufacturers with a controlled environment to present their latest luxury cars to a receptive audience of buyers and collectors.
For example, the Lamborghini Aventador made its debut in 2011, followed by the highly anticipated Veneno in 2013. The successor to the Aventador, the Revuelto, was initially launched through an online unveiling, but the Temerario — the Huracán’s successor — was publicly revealed at The Quail in 2024. Similarly, the Fenomeno, a seven-figure machine, premiered at The Quail in 2025. While Bugatti launched the Chiron in Geneva in 2016, the Bugatti Divo (2018) and Mistral (2022) were both unveiled at The Quail. These examples extend to dozens of other manufacturers, solidifying The Quail’s reputation as the world’s leading exhibition platform for modern exotic cars.
This trend highlights a critical shift in the collector cars market. While classic cars continue to command premium prices, the modern hypercar segment has seen exponential growth, as detailed in industry reports by mortgage rate analysts and financial services firms who track luxury consumer behavior. The Quail represents the zenith of this segment, but a new power is emerging in the Las Vegas market.
The Las Vegas Concours: A New Challenger to The Quail
Until this past Halloween, I thought The Quail’s standing was secure. However, after attending the 2025 Las Vegas Concours (officially known as the Concours at Wynn Las Vegas), I am no longer so certain. I attended the 2024 Vegas Concours and, while enjoyable, it felt provincial. It was a display of luxury cars but lacked the gravitas of the other top-tier events. In fact, were it not for a collaboration with Czinger that secured my invitation, I might have skipped the 2025 event. I am immensely glad I attended. The 2026 Concours d’elegance season is here, and the Las Vegas event is positioning itself to dominate the market.
An Unprecedented Display of Bugatti Veyrons
The Wynn showcased an astonishing 48 Bugatti Veyrons on the lawn. To put this in perspective: out of the 450 Veyrons built globally and the 100 sold in North America, 48 were present in Las Vegas. Including a white Vitesse Super Sport celebrating the Veyron’s 20th anniversary, alongside a Bolide, Centodieci, Chiron Super Sport, Divo, Mistral, and a model of the upcoming 18-cylinder Tourbillon, this was more than 10% of all Bugatti Veyrons ever built displayed in one location. The scale of this exhibit is simply astounding and challenges the exclusivity that defined events like The Quail.
The Dominance of Pagani
The response from Pagani fans was equally thrilling. While I did not conduct an official count—my focus was on the Bugattis—the number exceeded 40. This collection featured several Zondas, including a Zonda Revolution (one of only five), dozens of Huayras, numerous Utopias, and, notably, the Huayra Codalunga Speedster. Pagani plans to build only 10 units of this six-figure masterpiece, priced at approximately $7 million each before taxes and tariffs. The green example displayed was owned by Apple’s Tim Cook. Even for those not partial to these carbon-titanium extroverts, the fact that the 2025 Las Vegas Concours hosted the largest Pagani gathering ever in North America, and that Horatio Pagani himself chose to introduce a car there, is significant. As an industry expert, I believe this is a strategic move by Pagani to position itself in the growing US market.
A Mind-Blowing Lamborghini Collection
The Lamborghini display was equally captivating for enthusiasts of luxury sports cars. The 2025 Wynn Vegas Concours hosted the largest gathering of Lamborghinis ever, with estimates placing the number at around 230 cars—out of a total of 600 on display. This is a truly mind-blowing statistic. The collection included a Veneno Coupe (one of three sold to the public, with the factory retaining a fourth), a Sesto Elemento (one of 10), a Centenario Coupe (one of 20), a Centenario Convertible (one of 20), and a Reventón (one of 21). The last time all these “limited-production” models were seen together was at the Lamborghini Museum. It was an awe-inspiring assembly of high-horsepower Italian composite vehicles that mirrors the investments made in real estate investment and the insurance industry, all driven by exclusivity and demand.
The Sheer Scale of the Event
In the interest of brevity, I omitted many other exceptional vehicles: numerous Koenigseggs, the Gumpert Apollo, the Czingers, the Nilu, the debut of the McLaren Project Endurance race car, all the vehicles that were officially judged (including a 1929 Mercedes-Benz 680 S Barker Tourer that won Best of Show at Pebble Beach previously), the HWA EVO, a Mercedes-AMG One, two Oldsmobile Aerotechs, and a McLaren F1. While mortgage rates and home loans are critical components of modern financial planning, the allure of collector cars provides a compelling opportunity for alternative investments, as detailed in our comprehensive guide to home equity lines of credit and wealth management strategies. This caliber of luxury cars on display ensures the Las Vegas Concours is a major player in the luxury automotive market.
What Could Possibly Be Next?
Two recurring themes dominated conversations among attendees at the Wynn Vegas Concours. The primary question: “How on earth can they top this next year?” No one has a clue, but I offer my best wishes to the organizers at Wynn. The second, and frankly far more intriguing, question came from the automotive OEMs: “Should we even bother participating in The Quail next year?” This is a valid query. Perhaps I should also offer my best wishes to The Quail.
