In 2026, this legacy continues to unfold not just through historical monuments, but at the Audrain Concours d’Elegance, a world-class event that has rapidly ascended to the upper echelon of automotive gatherings. The question remains: what does it truly take to navigate this rarefied landscape of automotive perfection? Donald Osborne, the inimitable master of ceremonies known for his sharp wit, impeccable style, and surprising vocal talents, often sets the stage with a question that challenges the very essence of attendance: “So asked Donald Osborne, the Italian-speaking, bowtie-wearing, opera-singing master of ceremonies and spiritual advisor to one of the best car events on the calendar, the Audrain Concours d’Elegance held in the gilded age mecca of Newport, Rhode Island.” While the question itself may appear simple, it encapsulates a deeper inquiry into one’s role—whether as a casual observer, an eager collector, or a privileged judge. Osborne and I shared a common ground, both finding ourselves in Miami for MODA (Miami Automotive Dealers’ Association), RM Sotheby’s inaugural automotive event. This event, conceptualized as a rebuttal to Amelia Island after a significant talent exodus from RM to Hagerty’s Broad Arrow auction house, was a testament to the ever-shifting dynamics of the high-stakes collector car world. The Audrain Concours d’Elegance founders had been extending an invitation to attend since its inception in 2019. Looking at Osborne, the challenge was laid bare: “Make me a judge?” A flash of his characteristic smile, a wave of the hand, and the verdict was swift: “You’re a judge. See you in Newport.”
Into the Deep End: A Journey into Automotive Prestige My first encounter with Pebble Beach, the granddaddy of all extravagant classic car shows, left me feeling profoundly inexperienced. This was in the pre-social media era, a time when the concept of such exclusive gatherings was still nascent in the public consciousness. I entered the hallowed grounds of the Audrain Concours d’Elegance without even knowing what to wear, naively assuming it was merely a casual event. My attire was, in hindsight, embarrassingly informal. One thing I did notice, however, was that my friend, the Pulitzer Prize–winning automotive journalist Dan Neil, was serving as an honorary judge. It was an inspiring sight, and it planted a seed in my mind—a thought spurred by an undefeated ego: “Why not me?” The Audrain Concours d’Elegance: Pebble Beach 2.0? The Audrain Concours d’Elegance is often discussed in the same breath as Pebble Beach. Jay Leno, a prominent figure in the classic car collecting community, has often remarked that the Audrain surpasses its Californian counterpart. This sentiment was echoed during The Gathering, held at Doris Duke’s legendary Newport estate, Rough Point—Audrain’s answer to The Quail. Spike Feresten, co-host of Spike’s Car Radio and inventor of the iconic phrase “No soup for you!”, joined me for a live show with Leno as our guest. Leno highlighted that the Audrain Concours d’Elegance resembles Pebble Beach as it was 15 years ago. Given Leno’s significant real estate holdings in Newport, his presence underscores the event’s growing importance. In fact, the city proclaimed October 2, 2025, as Jay Leno Day, cementing his integral role in the Audrain’s narrative. The Art of Judging: Navigating the Judging Process On the day of the main competition, I found myself seated at the judges’ breakfast, surrounded by the aroma of coffee, eggs, and sausage. Head judge Phil Neff posed a critical question to the room: “Is there anyone here who hasn’t judged a concours?” Silence followed, including from me. While I hadn’t judged a prestigious event like the Audrain Concours d’Elegance, I had extensive experience judging classic car events, specifically Concours d’LeMons. I had lost count of the number of times I’d served in this capacity and had even sworn never to do it again. Should I have raised my hand? Who knows. But it’s cars, isn’t it? How hard could it be? Remember, my ego is undefeated. Why not me? Neff and his team assigned me to work alongside Ray Evernham, the NASCAR Hall of Fame crew chief renowned for his numerous victories with Jeff Gordon. Evernham and I connected immediately upon realizing we had both raced at Pikes Peak. Our task was to award the Sporting Choice Award, a special prize designated for the most sporting car on the show field. I approached Neff for clarification. Was he looking for sports cars or actual race cars? “Yes,” he replied with a smile. This meant we were responsible for evaluating every two-door or doorless car on display. This encompassed well over 100 vehicles, and we had just two hours to complete the task. Wearing our judge hats, medallions, clipboards, No. 2 pencils, and navy blazers, Evernham and I quickly formulated a plan. As with all concours, cars are organized into classes. We decided to review each class, identify one car that “popped,” and record our top four or five favorites. We were explicitly instructed not to get bogged down in the typical nitpicky minutiae that plague modern car judging. Who cares if the trunk lining is incorrect? In fact, do not even open the trunk. The Art of the Deal: Modern Investment vs Classic Ownership While the Audrain Concours d’Elegance focuses on classic automobiles and aesthetic perfection, the modern world of automotive investing and classic car collecting is driven by cold hard data and ROI. When considering a vehicle as a financial asset, understanding market valuation, restoration costs, and long-term appreciation is paramount. Should You Invest in Classics or Focus on Modern Deals? The decision to invest in a classic car, like the examples seen at the Audrain, requires careful consideration. If you are looking for stable, long-term growth and are willing to put in the effort, a classic can be a smart choice. However, if you are looking for quick returns or the latest automotive technology, you might be better off looking at modern options.
What This Means for You: If you are interested in owning an Audrain Concours d’Elegance-level car, be prepared for a significant financial commitment. These vehicles are not just beautiful; they are expensive to acquire, maintain, and preserve. Best Financial Strategies Right Now (2026): In 2026, the market offers a mix of opportunities for both classic and modern car enthusiasts. For Classic Car Investors: Focus on vehicles with clear provenance, strong racing heritage, and limited production runs. The Audrain provides an excellent showcase for identifying potential future appreciation leaders. For Modern Car Buyers: Look for electric vehicles (EVs) with high resale values and upcoming models from manufacturers like Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid. These cars offer advanced technology and potential incentives. Mistakes to Avoid: Buying a car based solely on looks without researching its history, market value, or maintenance costs can lead to significant financial losses. Always verify the car’s condition and authenticity before making a purchase. Still Not Simple: The Challenge of Automotive Judgment Two of the classes at the Audrain Concours d’Elegance quickly made me realize the absurdity of my “Why not me?” fantasy. Class D comprised six Ford GT40 road cars, seemingly identical in quality as GT40 Mk1 homologation specials. They all looked spectacular, and without checking carb-bolt alignment (as instructed), I had no idea how one would pick a winner. We couldn’t. Put another way, the judges for Class D had to be genuine subject matter experts. The same applied to Class A, the prewar Alfa Romeo division, which featured six mind-blowingly excellent 8Cs. I couldn’t begin to explain why the winning car was chosen, though the burgundy beauty went on to win Best of Show, which somehow felt right. Navigating Market Trends: Classic vs Modern Investments The modern classic car collecting market is characterized by volatile price fluctuations. Unlike traditional investments, cars can depreciate rapidly if not maintained or if the market shifts. For investors interested in classic automobiles, understanding auction results and collector demand is critical. Cost Breakdown / Pricing Impact (if applicable): Investing in a classic car show-worthy vehicle involves more than just the purchase price. Acquisition Costs: A rare 8C Alfa Romeo or a Ford GT40 homologation special can easily command millions of dollars at auction. Maintenance & Restoration: Restoring a vintage Ferrari or a historic race car can cost hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of dollars, depending on the complexity and rarity of the vehicle. Storage: Secure and climate-controlled storage is essential to preserve the car’s value, adding ongoing monthly expenses to your investment.
